Espresso was invented in Italy in the early 20th century as a faster way to make coffee for individuals rather than brewing a full pot. The word means "pressed out" in Italian. A proper espresso is made by forcing hot water through finely ground, tamped coffee at 9 bars of pressure in 25-30 seconds.
